Are you planning your first boat adventure on Alabama’s beautiful Lewis Smith Lake? Renting a pontoon boat or Sea-Doo Jet Ski can be a fun and easy experience–especially with Smith Lake Watersports. We’ll walk you through exactly what to expect, from on-site orientation and safety gear to legal requirements. By the end, you’ll feel confident renting a boat in Alabama and ready for a smooth, enjoyable day on the water.
Before you hit the lake, it’s important to understand Alabama’s boating laws and who can legally operate a boat or PWC. Key requirements in Alabama (2024–25) include:
Minimum Age: No one under 12 years old may operate any motorized vessel (including a Sea-Doo or other personal watercraft) on Alabama waters alea.gov.
License at 12+: Anyone 12 or older must obtain an Alabama Boater License (the “V” endorsement on your driver’s license) to operate a boat or PWC alea.govalea.gov. However, 12–13-year-old operators must have a licensed adult (21+) on board at all times alea.gov.
Operate Alone at 14+: Boaters 14 or older can operate alone once licensed, without the need for a chaperone alea.gov.
Always Carry Your License: By law, the operator certification (boating license/certificate) must be on board the vessel while operating alea.gov. In practice, rental companies will verify you have it before letting you go.
New Requirement for Visitors: Beginning Oct. 1, 2024, any non-resident must carry a valid boater safety certificate. That means if you’re from out of state, bring proof of completion of your home state’s boating course (or an Alabama-approved course) to rent or drive a boat here alea.gov.
Life Jackets Required: Alabama law requires one USCG-approved life jacket (PFD) per person on board alea.gov. Rental boats and Sea-Doos at Smith Lake Watersports come with life jackets in various sizes to fit everyone in your party, which you must wear whenever appropriate.
Kill Switch (Engine Cut-off) Rules: Every PWC and any boat with an open cockpit over 50 horsepower must have a working engine cut-off switch (kill switch) and lanyard attached to the operator alea.gov. Our Sea-Doos have this by default, and we’ll make sure you know how to use it.
In summary: Alabama law is strict about boaters’ ages and licensing. You’ll need to be at least 12 (with license and supervision) or 14+ (with license) to drive, and all out-of-state renters must have a boater safety card alea.govalea.gov. If you haven’t taken a boating course yet, you can enroll in Alabama’s free “Boating Basics” classes or online courses (Boat-Ed, etc.) so you can get licensed before your trip alea.govalea.gov.
When you arrive at Smith Lake Watersports for your pontoon or Sea-Doo rental, here’s the friendly, step-by-step process:
On-Site Orientation: Our trained staff will give you a briefing on boat/PWC operation and safety. For a pontoon, we’ll show you how to start the engine, steer, and anchor/dock safely. For a Sea-Doo, we’ll demonstrate the throttle, steering, and the critical kill-switch lanyard. We also highlight any lake-specific rules (no-wake zones, swim areas, fuel stops) so you feel comfortable before departure. Don’t worry if it’s your first time – our team is very patient and will answer all your questions.
Safety Gear & Equipment: Every rental comes with all required safety gear. You’ll get life jackets (PFDs) for each person, including child-sized jackets for little ones, plus a throwable cushion if the boat is large (required if over 16 ft) alea.gov. The boat will also have a fire extinguisher, horn/whistle, paddles or oars (in case of motor trouble), and other state-mandated equipment. Sea-Doos include a waterproof kill-switch lanyard, as mentioned, and often a tethered paddle.
Fuel and Operation: Our boats and Sea-Doos come with a full tank of gas. (Be sure to ask about fuel policies – many rentals expect you to return full or charge a refuel fee.) We’ll explain how to monitor fuel, and where to refill if needed. As you drive off, expect smoother waters near the marina; once you’re out, you can head across beautiful Smith Lake for endless coves and sandy beaches.
Parking and Check-In: Ample free parking is available at the rental dock. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early. You’ll fill out a short rental agreement, present your ID and boater license/cert (per ALEA requirements alea.gov), and watch a quick safety video or live demo. Then you’ll hop aboard and you’re off!
To make your outing worry-free, bring these essentials and tips:
What to Bring: Pack light, but be sure to have sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses (bonus: sunglasses with a strap so they don’t fall in). Bring towels and swimwear if you plan to swim. Carry drinking water and snacks or a picnic – coolers are welcome on the boat (but no glass bottles, please). A waterproof bag or ziplock can keep your phone and wallet safe from splashes. Of course, bring your driver’s license (with the “V” boater endorsement if you’re 14+ AL resident) or your boating safety certificate/ID.
Children and Extras: If you have small kids, feel free to bring their own Coast-Guard–approved life vests – though we also provide child-sized jackets. Pack extra clothing if it’s chilly on the water. Some people bring water shoes (the lake bottom can be rocky), towels, and even folding beach chairs if you plan to dock for a while.
Arrival Tips: Smith Lake Watersports gets busy on weekends and holidays, so book in advance to guarantee your pontoon or Sea-Doo. Arrive on time – we start rental periods promptly – and call ahead if you might be late. Keep an eye on the weather: if thunderstorms are forecast, we’ll often let you reschedule.
Safety and Courtesy: Even though you’re having fun, please follow lake rules: slow down near other boats, don’t cut someone off, and obey any posted speed or no-wake zones. Keep a reasonable distance from swimmers, and remember that life jackets are for wearing when the boat is in motion (especially for kids under 8, who must wear PFDs at all times while underway alea.gov). We’ll cover all of this in the orientation, but it helps to have an open mind and a safety-first attitude.
Ready to take the next step? Smith Lake Watersports makes booking easy. You can reserve your pontoon boat or Sea-Doo online or by phone; just let us know the date, your party size, and whether you prefer a boat or personal watercraft. Since Alabama requires that all operators have a valid boating certification/license alea.govalea.gov, please have that information ready when you book.
We recommend reserving early, especially for summer weekends. Mention any special requests (like extra PFDs, a larger pontoon, or beginner-friendly instructions). On the day of your trip, plan to arrive 15–30 minutes before departure time for check-in. And remember: our friendly staff is here to answer any last-minute questions, whether it’s about fueling, parking, or lake routes.
